Minimum System Requirements:

• CPU: Minimum 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor
• RAM: Minimum 512 MB
• Disk: Minimum 32 GB
• Network: Gigabit (10/100/1000 Ethernet adapter)

Microsoft Recommended Requirements:

• CPU : 2 GHz or faster
• RAM : 2 GB RAM or greater
• Disk : 40 GB or greater
• Network: Gigabit (10/100/1000 Ethernet adapter)

Before going to start the upgradation, we have to verify the Windows Server OS version details by open the command prompt and type winver

Verify it is Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter and Microsoft Windows Server Version 6.1 (Build 7600)

Download the Windows Server 2012 R2 ISO Image and mount the ISO Image to CD/DVD, then start the upgradation by click Windos Server 2012 R2 Run setup.exe.

After few minutes, it will launch windows setup then click Install now to begin the upgradation

Select Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings, and applications

Unable to upgrade due to compatibility issue, it will generate Compatibility report and saved on desktop

As I verified in Google, I found that, we cannot upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter to Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter directly. We can upgrade Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1 to Windows Server2012 R2. please find the below table for your reference.

I started download the Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1, that is windows6.1-KB976932-X64 from the below this link. https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/download/details.aspx?id=5842

To continue install Windows Server Service Pack 1, click Next

Select I accept the license terms and click Next

Check the box, Automatically restart the computer and click Install

Installing Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 is in progress

Server automatically rebooted and configuring service pack, after that login the server

Verify Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 is now installed and click Close

We have to verify the Windows Server OS version details by open the command prompt and type winver

Verify Windows Server version is Microsoft Windows Server Version 6.1 (Build 7601:Service Pack 1)

Mount the ISO Image to CD/DVD, then start the upgradation by click Install now

To Get Important updates for Windows Setup, click No, thanks

Select Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter (Server with a GUI) and click Next

Select I accept the license terms and click Next

Select Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings, and applications

Checking compatibility is in progress

click Next to continue the upgradation

Copying Windows files is in progress

Windows needs to restart to continue, click Restart now

After restarted the system, its upgrading the windows is in progress

Again, Windows need to restart to continue, click Restart now

Getting devices ready is 100% completed

Now, its Finalizing your settings

Installing .NET Framework 4.6.1.. is in progress

Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Launchpad

click Begin install to continue upgradation

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to Sign in

Upgradation is completed, now login with domain administrator and password

Windows Home Server
